LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - AUGUST 20, 2018

As you may have read in your latest newsletter, The Advisor,  from the Teacher Retirement System (https://www.ok.gov/TRS/documen...) retirees of the state’s public pension systems will be receiving a one-time stipend of 2% of their annual benefit in October 2018.

OREA was able to lobby for this stipend benefit, and able to improve the benefit slightly for those beneficiaries retired the longest. Although the stipend was a huge disappointment compared to the cost of living adjustment legislation we heavily lobbied for, it is the first financial relief retirees have seen in over 10 years.

WHEN WILL WE GET OUR STIPEND?

The distribution date in law is October 1, 2018. It will be a separate payment and not included in the regular monthly check. The payment will most likely come between October 10th and 15th. Payments will go to retirees or their surviving joint annuitants. One must be retired at least 5 years as of October 1 of this year, and those retired 20 or more years will receive a minimum of $350. The Oklahoma Teacher Retirement System has listed the most frequently asked questions (https://www.ok.gov/TRS/Stipend...) .

The OREA Fund has made a list of recommendations for the 2018 Election Cycle. Please note that contributions made to candidates DO NOT include ANY dues dollars. All contributions are voluntary and our fund complies with the rules of the Oklahoma Ethics Commission. Recommendations are based on the candidate’s views specific to the OREA’s legislative goals.
